(31 may. 1863, Murree, India–31 jul. 1942, Lytchett Minster, Dorset, Inglaterra).

Explorador y militar británico. Forzó la conclusión del tratado anglo-tibetano (1904) que otorgó a Gran Bretaña concesiones comerciales largamente esperadas. A pesar de la acción militar británica fracasaron sus dos intentos iniciales por negociar asuntos comerciales y fronterizos con el Tíbet. Marchó entonces rumbo a Lhasa al mando de tropas británicas y forzó la firma de un tratado comercial, aunque el Dalai Lama, líder del Tíbet, había escapado. See also amban.
